Where can I find the VIN?

Free Rego Check

What is a Free Rego Check?

A registration (rego) check is a free service and online tool which is typically used to confirm the registration status and other details of a vehicle. By running a free rego check, you can find out:

  • Whether a vehicle is registered, and the rego expiry date
  • Vehicle details, including the make, model and type
  • Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurer information
  • Further registration details, such as restrictions

How do I run a free rego check?

To run a free registration check, you need to use the registration number or the 17-digit VIN number.

Once you have the number, refer to the Government body responsible for registration in the appropriate State or Territory. Here’s a list to help you:

ACT – Access Canberra
New South Wales – NSW Roads and Maritime Services
NT – Northern Territory Department of Transport
SA – Government of South Australia
QLD – Queensland Government
VIC – VicRoads
WA – Western Australia Department of Transport

Why should I check my registration?

It is each driver’s individual responsibility to make sure that the car they’re driving is registered. This is true not only for your vehicle, but any vehicle you decide to drive.

Driving an unregistered vehicle can be unsafe as there may be a reason that the car was unable to be registered – such as mechanical faults. Checking your registration will tell you important information which often indicates the safety status of a vehicle (see above).

The financial cost associated with driving a car which isn’t registered can be great. They can include liability for injury and damage to third parties, as CTP insurance may be void as a result.

Be a responsible driver and help maintain your safety, as well as the safety of your passengers and third parties on roads in Australia, complete a rego check!
